The Most Ridiculous Game Ever: Huskies-Baylor

Little did Richardson know, the play had begun.
Perhaps you had noticed that Nick Holt has been fired as defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies.  Perhaps you asked why?  Why would you fire a man who was so well regarded when we hired him and is best friends forevers with Steve Sarkisian?  Perhaps you are an idiot.  It seems that way.  Hey man, I just call it how I see it.

Yes, the Husky defense was terrible this season, giving up just about 450 yards per game, or roughly the season total in yardage for Kasen Williams.  Now, I would not be opposed to facing Kasen Williams as an opponent each week, but this would only be ok with me if he was the only member of the opposition.  I am confident that Desmond Trufant, Quinton Richardson, and Sean Parker could combine to hold one person under 100 yards receiving.  Sadly, this is not how football works.

And so we return to Nick Holt.  After all of his terrible performances this season (more accurately, his defense's performances, but who do you think runs the defense?  Man, you really are stupid), Nick Holt had to understand that this bowl game was his last chance to prove he knew how to run a defense.  With that in mind, its made all the more mindboggling how poorly they performed.

777 yards of offense.  Baylor had more offense than any receiver on the Seahawks.  More yards than four of the starting running backs in the Pac-12.  More points than the 49ers give up every five games.  This is unbelievable.  It just doesn't make sense that any team can score 56 points in regulation and lose by 10 points.  Keith Price had seven touchdowns by himself, and lost.  Tevin Reese had two carries for the Baylor Bears, and yet was over 100 yards rushing.  It seems impossible for any of this to be true, and yet Nick Holt managed to make a team this bad.  I honestly believe most D-II teams would fair better defensively against Baylor than the Huskies did.

Luckily for us, Nick Holt is gone, and with that comes hope.  The Huskies could score with the best of them this season, and yet finished 7-6, entirely because of their defensive shortcomings.  Of the top of my head, here is a list of things that would play better defense than the Huskies did:

  • The Husky basketball team (at football)
  • 55 year old Michael Cooper
  • An empty football field
  • The Husky offense
  • A light rain
Yet there is hope for next season now.  We can actually believe that somehow, someway, the Huskies will field an average defense.  There is certainly talent there, as the Huskies have recruited at as high of a level defensively as they have offensively over the last few years.  It does not seem possible to blame our struggles on really anything other than bad coaching and that's gone, as long as the Huskies decided to hire someone who has ever watched a game of football.

And so, with the new year unfolding ahead of us, let us take heart in the fact that maybe the Husky defense will have some now.

  1. Actually, Doug Baldwin had 788 yards receiving this season -- 11 more yards than the Baylor's offense that fateful day.
